ServiceNow Upgrade Readiness Check

Twelve checks on whether an upgrade would finish. Deferred upgrades compound rather than queue, and the instinct to plan properly is how instances stay behind another year.

Most stalled upgrades do not stall on the technical work. They stall because the inventory was never done, the regression pack did not exist, or nobody could decide which customisations to abandon. This check tests readiness to finish, not readiness to start.

Nothing you enter leaves your browser. There is no form submission, no analytics on your answers, and no email required to see the result. These questions are about the state of your platform, so that matters.

Current position

Skipping four releases is not four times the work of skipping one. Drift compounds against a platform that changed underneath it.

  1. You know exactly how many releases behind the instance is.

  2. You know when the last successful upgrade completed and who ran it.

  3. The reason for each deferral is documented, rather than being general reluctance.

Customisation inventory

Most customisations on an old instance are either dead or now available out of the box. Classification precedes planning.

  1. A current inventory of customisations exists, with an owner for each.

  2. You can tell which customisations are still executing and which are dormant.

  3. You have checked which customisations have been superseded by out-of-box capability.

Regression capability

Building the regression pack first is what separates upgrades that finish from upgrades that are perpetually re-planned.

  1. A regression test pack exists and has been run at least once in the last year.

  2. The pack covers the integrations, not only the forms and workflows.

  3. Someone can execute it without the person who wrote it.

Environments and ownership

Schedules die on environment access and on decisions nobody is authorised to make.

  1. A sub-production instance reflects production closely enough to test against.

  2. One person is accountable for the upgrade completing, not merely coordinating it.

  3. There is an agreed answer to what happens if a customisation cannot be brought forward.
